American soprano Jody Sheinbaum has become an artist of note, delighting audiences everywhere with her “silky voice” (The New Music Connoisseur) and her charming and winsome stage presence. Her operatic appearances and her performances in recital and with orchestras across the country consistently receive high praise.
Ms. Sheinbaum has appeared with New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theater, Opera Festival of New Jersey, Center City Opera Theater, the Bard Music Festival, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Fe Symphony, Symphony of the Americas, the Louisiana Philharmonic, and the New York Pops, among others. Roles of note include Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Despina in Così fan tutte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito, Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne, Serpina in La Serva Padrona, and Musetta in La Bohème. Her contemporary roles include Baby Doe in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Beth in Mark Adamo’s Little Women, Sybil in Lowell Liebermann’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Young Alyce in Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied. In addition, Ms. Sheinbaum has performed Ally Hawes in the Stephen Paulus’ Summer with Center for Contemporary Opera; Jenny in Ned Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters with Encompass New Opera Theater; the principal soprano in Stefan Weisman’s Darkling and Doña Clara in The Bridge of San Luis Rey with American Opera Projects; Jenny in the premiere performances of The Song of Eddie at The Bard Music Festival; and Asia in Jonathan Dawe’s Prometheus at the Guggenheim in New York.
Her orchestral appearances include Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with the Louisiana Philharmonic; First Woman in Handel’s Solomon with the Santa Fe Symphony; the title role in Alessandro Scarlatti’s oratorio La Giuditta at the Théâtre du Moulin d’Andé; Strauss’s “Brentano Lieder” with the Mannes Orchestra; Opera Highlights with Symphony of the Americas, and her Carnegie Hall debut singing Romberg with Skitch Henderson and The New York Pops.
Ms. Sheinbaum’s recital repertoire includes a wide variety of song literature ranging from European dialects to contemporary American songs. She has given recitals in the United States, France and Japan, and has a unique interest and specialty in performing Japanese art song. Ms. Sheinbaum has been a featured soloist with Crossroads Arts Council, Trinity Church’s Noonday Concert Series, and Bargemusic’s Here and Now Contemporary Music Series. She has performed numerous premieres of song cycles, including Tom Cipullo’s How to Get Heat Without Fire and Russell Platt’s From Noon to Starry Night: A Walt Whitman Cantata. Her recording of Platt’s From Noon To Starry Night with The Mirror Visions Ensemble was recently released on Albany Records.
A native of New Jersey, Ms. Sheinbaum has been the recipient of many awards, including a Richard F. Gold Career Grant; the Anna Case Mackay Memorial Award from the Santa Fe Opera; and a Liederkranz Foundation Award for voice. Ms. Sheinbaum is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received her Master’s degree from the Mannes College of Music.
